Plants need protection

Farmers take numerous measures to protect their crops. For example, they alternate the crops they grow in their fields (crop rotation) and choose resistant varieties. However, despite these precautions, pests, diseases or weeds can still threaten the harvest.

This is where plant protection products come into play. Before they can be used, they have to undergo strict testing procedures in Switzerland and gain authorisation from several authorities. Without these products, there would be a sharp decline in yields from Swiss agriculture, with some estimates suggesting a loss of 20 to 40 percent.

High expectations for natural products

Consumers expect flawless products – as if straight out of a picture book. Even cosmetic damage such as hail dents or rust sports can render a harvest unsellable. These high standards even apply to natural products and present farmers with significant challenges.

Natural plant protection products on the rise

An ever increasing number of natural methods are also being used in conventional farming. Already today, one in every three plant protection products in Switzerland is also authorised for organic farming. Modern technologies such as weed-control robots also help to reduce the use of chemicals in a targeted manner.

Swiss agriculture remains free of GMOs

Switzerland currently has a moratorium on the cultivation of genetically modified plants – with the exception of strictly monitored research trials. Swiss livestock also do not receive genetically modified feed.

Many consumers appreciate this freedom from GMOs. Critics, on the other hand, see this cautious approach as a missed opportunity. They emphasise the potential offered by genetic engineering to make plants more resistant and the process of protecting crops more sustainable.
