Regional produce from the Schlattgut – offering a genuine farm experience

Hello and a warm welcome to Schlattgut farm in Herrliberg! I’m Domenik Ledergerber and, since 2019, I’ve been running the farm with my brother Andrin in the third generation, with the active support of our parents and partners. Come with me to our farm shop and I’ll show you what regionality means for me.

What is “regionality”?

Before we set off – just one question: did you know that, unlike the case for “bio”, there is no established definition of the term “regionality” in Switzerland?

For me, “regional” means having the entire value chain located within a single region – and the smaller the radius, the better. It would be desirable for everything to be produced within an individual commune or district, but this is often not possible. But as long as everything comes from within the same canton, that’s regional for me. Organic has never been an issue for us, because our parents focused on regionality already and built up the Schlattgut brand on this basis.

Let’s get going. Our farm dog Maiko will also be coming with us.

Direct marketing

The trend towards regional, sustainable food is particularly evident in our farm shop. Here we sell our home-made specialities and always have seasonal fruit and vegetables on offer. Our top-selling products are our fresh eggs and our home-made Schlattgut ice-cream, which we now sell all year round. While parents are doing their shopping, the children can watch our 950 or so chickens through the window in the farm shop, or visit our cows and donkeys.

Our customers especially appreciate the proximity to our animals and to us as a family. Shopping in our farm shop is an experience for them. This experience component – the conveying of emotions – is also part of regionality for me.

Regional products as a luxury

Over the past few years, we have been able to expand the marketing of our products even further through partnerships. We supply eggs to Confiserie Honold for their sandwiches and ice-cream to local swimming pools, for example. We are very fortunate in being members of The Living Circle, a group of luxury hotels and restaurants. Do you know the Storchen or Widder Hotels in Zurich? They both serve Schlattgut eggs for breakfast. This type of luxury, namely fresh products from our own farm that have travelled no further than 15 km and come from happy animals, constitutes the perfect example of regionality for me.

Pay us a visit!

I hope I’ve been able to give you some idea of how we Ledergerbers are living out our philosophy of regional and sustainable products. Pay us a visit at the Schlattgut and experience our regional products with all the different senses.

What’s more: we’re also experts when it comes to events and weddings. We look forward to welcoming you!
